To be clear, Stewart’s displeasure lies with Cutler’s priorities, including his 2004 imprisonment for obstruction of justice in an insider trading case. The 83-year-old doesn’t care about the harsh or revealing things he shows, because almost all of those harsh and revealing things come from Stewart’s quotes. A few minutes later, she blithely describes herself as her father’s favorite, points out his alcoholism and notes that it was a bigot who slapped her. It’s just Stewart warming up.

Some of his quotes are far-fetched, whether in their lack of tact or in their eye-catching revelations. Stewart has built several fascinating lives over the past 60 years: Wall Street pioneer, restaurant queen, original influencer, media mogul, billionaire and Snoop Dogg’s best friend. Each is accompanied by cutting observations, terrific archival material, and unfiltered truths. Stewart was clearly a brutal boss. “I never look away,” she says, and fortunately neither does Cutler’s documentary.

Bad sisters (season 2)

It’s understandable that a second season of this Irish dark comedy has gone into production. Its 2022 debut, led by creator and co-star Sharon Horgan, was one of the year’s most welcome TV surprises, blending complex sisterly bonds, biting humor and a critique of Irish misogyny into a wish fulfillment television. It was a sharp farce with a great cast, but it felt complete by the end of the finale. Set two years later, the second season brings back the talent, but I can’t help but think it covers too much of the same ground.

Murder in full consciousness
Netflix

Another week, another intriguing German series that blurs familiar genre boundaries. In this dark comedy, which has a hint of the Coen brothers’ delirious, deadpan humor, successful criminal lawyer Bjorn (Tom Schilling, Never look away) realizes that he let being paid by mob boss Dragan (Sascha Gersak) ruin his family’s life. After taking a mindfulness course, Bjorn achieves a sense of clarity with unintended consequences. He begins to work through his problems and discovers a talent for the machinations of the underworld. It’s macabre but also satisfying – Bjorn’s brutal sense of liberation is genuine.

It would be easy to say that after giving Agatha throughout a live load, Aubrey Plaza is on a roll. But the actress has been an accelerator of everything she’s been involved in – even if some projects have been questionable – since her breakthrough in 2009 in Parks and Recreation. She’s great again in this American independent feature, which adds a supernatural twist to the coming-of-age tale as 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) finds himself in an unexpected conversation with Plaza in the role of ‘Elliott, 39 years old. This gets sentimental, but the metaphysical concept works.

Specters
Stan

Now that it has concluded after five successful seasons (the rather good American remake of the same title is in progress), let’s remember that each episode of one of the funniest British sitcoms of the last 10 years is ready to arrive late . Set in a ruined country house where one of the new owners gains the ability to interact with the many spirits trapped there from various periods in history, Specters was a spectral farce where the jokes were incessant but the tone still had an unforced feel.

Ghosts are terribly funny.
