14-year-old arrested in connection with multiple vehicle burglaries in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police arrested a 14-year-old boy Monday in connection with dozens of recent crimes, including several recent car burglaries.

While investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred on Oct. 31 that allegedly involved the boy, detectives located him in a recently stolen vehicle. While attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver refused and chased the officers, police said.

The vehicle was later found unoccupied in a parking lot on Kenmore Avenue, and police believed the people in the vehicle had entered a nearby home. Police said after obtaining consent to enter the home, detectives located the 14-year-old along with a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy.

All three were taken into custody and two firearms were recovered at the scene, police said.

The 14-year-old was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction, fleeing and eluding, police said.

News 5 spoke with Cleveland Police Public Information Officer Freddy Diaz Wednesday about the arrests:

14-year-old arrested for numerous crimes and vehicle break-ins

The teen is believed to be linked to numerous recent crimes in the city, including vehicle thefts, other car burglaries and thefts. Police said he has been arrested several times in the past for similar crimes, all of which are being investigated and charges will be filed.

“The devastation this individual is alleged to have caused in our community is beyond alarming and even more frustrating when you consider the number of second chances he was given. Instead of taking advantage of these opportunities, he chose to continue his criminality,” said Cleveland Mayor Justin. Bibb said in a statement: “Residents have had enough, businesses have had enough, and I have had enough. It’s time he is held fully accountable for the crimes he committed and I hope the justice system does just that. .”

The 13-year-old was wanted on a previous arrest warrant for felony assault. However, in connection with the Nov. 11 incident, he was arrested for obstruction, failure to comply and weapons violations, police said.

The 17-year-old man was arrested for robbery in connection with the Oct. 31 incident, police said.

The 14-year-old was also allegedly involved in at least 19 vehicle burglaries at Cleveland State University early Sunday morning.

Cleveland Police are asking anyone in the community with video footage of car break-ins near Downtown East and East 55th Street between Oct. 1 and Nov. 12 to send it to [email protected]. Police said they believe the 14-year-old was responsible for other incidents.

“I continually say that the men and women of the Cleveland Division of Police work extremely hard to investigate crimes and, time and time again, make these important arrests,” said Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd, in a press release. “It is disturbing to see juveniles bold enough to continue to commit these violent crimes. I hope that these arrests will lead to a visible change in their behavior and bring a sense of peace to our community which has been deeply affected by these crimes.
