‘Good Dad Act’ would give single fathers in Alabama parental rights with mother’s approval

Alabama state Rep. Patrick Sellers, D-Pleasant Grove, has filed a bill that would give “full rights and duties of a parent” to single fathers who voluntarily acknowledge paternity.

According to the text of the bill, this would only apply if the child’s mother approves and would not apply in cases of domestic or family violence.

Sellers called his bill “The Good Dad Act” and said ABC 33/40 that its goal is to “give children the healthiest environment possible.”

“Hopefully this will avoid the harmful effects that occur when a child is raised by a single parent,” he said.

The bill would also prevent parents from taking a child out of Alabama without permission from the other parent or the court.

And it would require a judge to consider shared custody and shared parenting time as the best option in cases involving child custody, visitation or child support, unless subsequent evidence shows otherwise, according to its text.

The Sellers bill is currently awaiting a decision in the House Judiciary Committee.
