Lethbridge police lay charges in carjacking

Lethbridge police have charged two people in connection with a weekend carjacking in which a stolen vehicle drove dangerously through the city.

The events occurred on Sunday shortly after 11:30 p.m.

Police said they were called to the 400 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South for reports of a verbal argument between a man and a woman.

Arriving police approached the man, but he fled.

“He spotted a truck moving nearby and kicked the driver out,” police said in a statement. “As the vehicle left the parking lot, police observed a passenger inside – and it was unclear at the time whether the individual was a victim of the carjacking.”

Police allege the defendant was driving erratically and at high speeds as he attempted to elude officers, at times swerving toward oncoming traffic.

“Given the significant danger to the public, police intercepted the vehicle at South 43rd Street, using a vehicle intervention technique to bring it to a stop.”

The action left the police vehicle and stolen truck coming to rest in a canal.

While police say the driver tried to flee on foot, he was arrested.

No injuries were reported and the passenger in the vehicle was determined to be the woman the driver had initially argued with.

The driver, a 33-year-old Nobleford resident, and the passenger, a 35-year-old Lethbridge woman, face a multitude of charges.
