Spartanburg food supplier Yu Shang Food flagged by USDA and recalled for listeria contamination

Yu Shang Food, Inc.a Spartanburg-based food manufacturing company, has been flagged by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for possible listeria contamination in nine of its packaged protein products, calling for a recall of those items.

On Saturday, November 9, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) announced that certain ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold by Yu Shang Food, which were being delivered to retailers nationwide and online, had been recalled. More than 4,589 pounds of meat and poultry products have been linked to potential listeria contamination.

Yu Shang Foods, Inc., located at 185 Southport Road in Spartanburg, recently had nine of its ready-to-eat protein foods recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

The protein products were manufactured between October 21 and 27, 2024 and have a “best before” date of August 21 to August 27, 2025. The recalled products contain the establishment number “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” inside the USDA inspection mark.

The contamination was discovered after FSIS conducted routine testing and follow-up activities on the finished product manufactured by Yu Shang Food, Inc. on October 21, 2024, which confirmed that the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

What nine packaged items have been reported as potentially contaminated with listeria?

The list of packaged proteins includes nine products made from chicken, pork and beef. Here are items that can be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the FSIS:

  • Yushang Brand Cooked Chicken (20oz Vacuum Pack)

  • Seasoned Pork Shank (20 ounces)

  • Japanese Chashu Pork Belly (16 ounce vacuum packed)

  • Braised pork belly with brown sauce (16 ounces)

  • Yushang brand cooked pork knuckle (1.4 pounds)

  • Chinese Brand Spicy Chicken Feet (8 ounces)

  • Bazhen Seasoned Whole Chicken (20 ounces)

  • Braised beef shank (16 ounces)

  • Seasoned pork tongues (12 ounces)

What can happen if listeria is eaten?

Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. People outside of these specific risk groups are less often affected.
