Cold weather forecast sees UK hit by -16C frost and up to 9 inches of snow | Weather | News

Millions of Brits are bracing for a bucketful of snow later this month, with some areas seeing well over nine inches of the white stuff.

Forecast data collected by WXcharts.com shows large amounts of snow and low temperatures sweeping large areas of the British Isles from November 20.

By 6am that day, snow depth is expected to be well below 10cm in most areas, with the south coast of England and westernmost areas of Wales being apparently untouched by the whiteout.

But by November 23, the intensity is expected to have increased, with areas around Birmingham potentially seeing up to 24cm of snow.

Maps suggest Wales and parts of England close to the border could also see amounts in the teens, while Northern Ireland could reach up to 8cm in some areas .

In several areas of Scotland snow depths could reach the 20s (including north-east communities around Aberdeenshire and Moray).

Temperatures will drop around this time, Netweather maps suggest, with almost nowhere in the British Isles above 0C on November 20.

In an area that appears to encompass where West Yorkshire, Lancashire and North Yorkshire meet, residents could face slamming temperatures of -8 or -9C that day.

On the 24th it will be warmer in the south, between 2°C and 6°C, but Scotland will be even colder with a big blue patch covering most of the continent.

Temperatures in some areas could drop as low as -16C in parts of the Highlands.

THE Met OfficeThe long-range forecast for the period November 18-27 indicates that frequent winter showers are expected during this period, “mainly in the north and along the east and west coasts, where they are exposed to the strong north-to-north flow -west”.

“Snow is likely to fall to low levels, particularly in the north. Many inland areas could be largely dry with long sunny periods, particularly where they are sheltered from the current.”

However, according to the government agency’s forecast, “there is a risk that more organized areas of rain and snow will extend eastward and cross areas further south.”

But the risk of widespread or disruptive snowfall affecting more populated areas at this stage remains low, the report said. Met Office said.

“It is cold everywhere with overnight frosts, and strong winds will bring significant wind chill. There is an indication that it may be less cold later in the period, with a stronger westerly flow establishing .”
