Delhi Mayor Election Live: Municipal elections are held every year in April with a five-year term comprising five one-year terms on a rotational basis.

Delhi Mayor Election Live: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to elect its new mayor on Thursday, following the appointment of a chairman by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Wednesday. BJP councilor Satya Sharma from Gautampuri was appointed by the LG president to oversee the elections, which were initially scheduled to be held in April.

The assembly will meet in the afternoon to elect a mayor, a post currently reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate, as required by the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act in the third round of elections to the house .

AAP’s Mahesh Kumar Khichi, 45, councilor of Dev Nagar ward in Karol Bagh, and BJP’s Kishan Lal, 47, of Shakurpur ward are contesting for the mayor’s post. For the post of deputy mayor, AAP’s Ravinder Bhardwaj, 35, from Aman Vihar (Kirari) and BJP’s Neeta Bisht, 41, from Sadatpur district, are the candidates.

The AAP boycotted the September elections, citing objections to the “search” of its advisers, while the Congress chose not to participate in the voting process. The next mayoral term, reserved for a reserved category candidate, faced delays due to procedural disagreements, including the appointment of a chairman by the lieutenant governor.

MCD surveys

In accordance with MCD regulations, mayoral elections are held annually in April, with each mayor serving a one-year term in a five-year rotation. The first mandate is reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for a reserved category and the last two mandates again for the open category.

This is the third mayoral term since the AAP took control of the MCD in December 2022, ending 15 years of BJP rule. According to sources, AAP is working to complete the projects before the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled early next year.
