CCAC urges holiday shoppers to assert their consumer rights and ensure value for money

As the end-of-year holidays approach, the Competition and Consumer Commission (CCAC) urges consumers to remain vigilant to ensure the value of their purchases and to assert their rights under the Consumer Protection Act. Consumer Affairs (CAA) No. 13 of 2011. The CCAC also reminds suppliers to comply with the provisions of the law and respect legal standards of service and customer satisfaction.

Historically, the holiday season is marked by an increase in consumer complaints, particularly regarding purchases of electronic and electrical items. CCAC expects this trend to continue and encourages consumers to be proactive and make informed decisions before finalizing their purchases. Key recommendations include creating a list, conducting thorough product and vendor research, and reading all contracts or agreements carefully before signing them.

One of the fundamental rights highlighted by the CCAC is the importance of requesting and retaining receipts, which serve as proof of purchase necessary for returns, refunds or exchanges. Consumers are also advised to inspect items before purchase and request written warranties of at least six months.

CCAC points out that non-defective items can generally be returned within seven days of purchase, provided they are in their original packaging, unused and in good condition. In these cases, suppliers may charge up to a 10% restocking fee, as permitted by law. The CCAC further warns suppliers against displaying “No Refunds” signs or refusing legitimate refunds, returns or exchanges in accordance with the Consumer Act.

To help consumers resolve their concerns, CCAC has simplified the complaint process with an online submission option at ccac.gov.gy. For additional inquiries, consumers are encouraged to contact us by telephone at 219-4410/3 or WhatsApp at 625-0557.

As consumers and businesses prepare for the holiday rush, CCAC recalls aim to foster a fair and transparent shopping environment that prioritizes consumer rights and satisfaction.
