Indian festival IFFI Goa presents shortlist of 15 films for Golden Peacock competition

The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has unveiled its main line-up, with 15 feature films in the running for the INR 4 million ($47,000) Golden Peacock Prize, including nine films directed by women .

World premieres include Iranian drama “Fear & Trembling” by Manijeh Hekmat and Faeze Azizkhani, which explores an elderly woman’s struggles against isolation, and “Raavsaheb” by Nikhil Mahajan, an Indian crime thriller examining male conflict. -animal in tribal lands.

The program includes flagship works from the festival circuit such as “Holy Cow” by Louise Courvoisier (France), winner of the Un Certain Regard Youth Prize at Cannes 2024, and “Toxic” by Saulė Bliuvaitė (Lithuania), winner of the Golden Leopard in Locarno 2024. The drama of the Romanian revolution “The New Year That Never Came” comes hot after winning Horizons in Venice and Prix FIPRESCI.

The program also includes “Gulizar” by Belkis Bayrak (Turkey), which played in Toronto and San Sebastian, and “Panopticon” by George Sikharulidze (Georgia-USA), which received a special mention from the ecumenical jury at Karlovy Vary. Singaporean Nelicia Low won the best director award at Karlovy Vary for her psychological thriller “Pierce”, also in competition in Goa.

The Indian contingent presents “The Goat’s Life” by Blessy adapted from the bestselling novel ‘Aadujeevitham’ and Aditya Suhas Jambhale’s novel. political thriller “Article 370”.

Other international entries include “I Am Nevenka” by Iciar Bollaín (Spain), which won the Basque Country Prize in San Sebastian, “Red Path” by Lotfi Achour (Tunisia), “Bergers” by Sophie Deraspea in Toronto (Canada-France), Jiri “Waves”, the Czech film by Madl at the Oscars, and the Berlin premiere of Meryam Joobeur “Who Do I Belong To” (Tunisia-Canada).

Veteran Indian filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker (“Lagaan,” “Swades”) chairs the jury, joined by Singaporean director Anthony Chen (winner of the Cannes Caméra d’Or for “Ilo Ilo”) and Anglo-American producer Elizabeth Karlsen (“Carol,” “The Crying Game”), Spanish producer Fran Borgia (“A Land Imagined,” “Stranger Eyes”) and Australian editor Jill Bilcock (“Moulin Rouge!”, “Romeo + Juliet”) “).

The festival runs from November 20 to 28 in Goa, India, and awards will be given for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Male), Best Actor (Female) and Special Jury Prize.
