Looming Canada Post strike prompts Burnaby residents to warn

Daily fees, charges and interest may apply to unpaid balances even if documents are delayed in the mail due to the strike, according to the city.

The City of Burnaby is urging local residents to go online for important information about business licenses, property tax and utility notices, and other payments if postal workers walk off the job this week.

Canada Post obtained strike notice of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on Tuesday, indicating that the union will be legally able to strike at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday.

“If postal services are affected, there may be delays in the delivery of important documents, notices and other correspondence sent by mail,” a city news release said Thursday.

The city warned that daily fees, charges and interest may apply to any unpaid balance, even if documents are delayed in the mail due to the strike, according to the release.

As an alternative to Canada Post, the city has offered a number of online options.

Businesses with expiring business licenses or residents with outstanding balances can register for a My real estate portal profile.

Public notices will continue to be posted on City premises. public notice webpage every Thursday and sent via CityConnect eNews.
