Emma Roberts to adapt Candace Bushnell’s ‘One Fifth Avenue’ for television

EXCLUSIVE: Emma Roberts and its Belletrist Productions, which are behind the popular Hulu drama Tell me lies based on Carola Lovering’s book, seek to bring another women’s novel to television. Roberts and producer Marc Klein (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) develop A fiftha television series adaptation of Candace Bushnellthe novel A Fifth Avenue.

Originally published in 2008 by Hachette Books, A Fifth Avenue tells the story of the eponymous Art Deco skyscraper towering over one of Manhattan’s oldest and most historically trendy neighborhoods – the kind of building you have to earn your place in – one way or another. For the women of One Fifth Avenue, this building is essential to the lives they have carefully established – or hope to establish. From the hedge fund king’s wife to the aging gossip columnist to the free-spirited actress (a recent refugee from Los Angeles), everyone’s plan for a rich life unfolds under the soaring roof of this iconic building.

Bushnell – whose chronicle and subsequent book Sex and the city were turned into the Emmy-winning HBO series and its current Max sequel, And just like that…will adapt her book and serve as executive producer. Klein will serve as executive producer under her Marci Klein Productions banner; Karah Preiss, co-founder of Roberts and Belletrist Productions, will also serve as executive producer.

It is possible that Roberts will also participate in the project, which is currently being purchased.

“Candace Bushnell is a cultural force to be reckoned with,” Klein, Roberts and Preiss said in a statement. “She is creatively responsible for the most influential television series and characters of the last 25 years and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with her on what we know will be the next great drama series about New York society and all its members.

A series adaptation of A Fifth Avenue was previously in development at ABC during the 2011-2012 development season Gossip Girl’with Josh Safran and producer Mark Gordon.

“I’m so excited to work with producers Marci Klein, Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss to bring my favorite novel to the small screen,” said Bushnell. “A Fifth Avenue is a contemporary look at the up-and-down world of high-stakes real estate, tech billionaires, old guard society, new guard upstarts, wannabes and bees busy in our modern golden age. We can’t wait to start building the world in one of Manhattan’s most iconic buildings, One Fifth Avenue.

Klein is repped by CAA and Peter Grant at Grubman Shire. Roberts is repped by CAA and Sweeney Entertainment. Bushnell is repped by Sugar23 and Heather Schroder of Compass Literary.
