LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott is calling for the continuation of the tuition freeze he signed for 2023 and 2024, extending it for the 2024 to 2025 academic year.

This will freeze undergraduate tuition and fees at all Texas public universities.

Dear President and Chancellor of University Systems:

Texans are facing significantly increased costs due to inflation. When inflation and other economic pressures strain household budgets, our public universities must take every step possible to ease the financial burden on our students and their families.

Last year, I signed legislation that prohibits increases in undergraduate tuition and fees for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years.

As this tuition freeze expires, let me be clear: I will not support any increase in tuition at any public institution of higher education in the next biennium.

My office has spoken with the Board of Regents of each public university system, and we agree that no Texas institution should approve tuition increases for the 2025-2026 school years and 2026-2027.

The state has made historic investments in higher education, including increasing college funding and financial aid programs. These efforts reflect our commitment to ensuring that higher education remains accessible and affordable for all Texans. When all Texans have access to quality, affordable education, they will be able to earn better wages, meet workforce qualifications, and enjoy a better quality of life. I will ensure college affordability remains a top priority for the state as we approach the next legislative session.
