Couple say they were burned by flaming drink that exploded in bar

DALLAS (WFAA) – A Dallas couple is suing the owners of a former bar.

The couple suffered third-degree burns after ordering a flaming cocktail which they say exploded.

Looking in the mirror is a lot harder now than it was two months ago for Abbi Hance-Briscoe and Dustin Johnson.

“They had to shave my head at the hospital to get access to the ear and scalp where it had been burned,” Hance-Briscoe described.

Today, the couple lives in discomfort, recovering from first, second and third degree burns to their upper bodies.

“That moment gets replayed more than it should,” Johnson said.

It all stemmed from a fiery drink order, the couple says, from the former Twisted Trick on Cedar Springs Road.

“My skin was falling off my arms,” Hance-Briscoe said.

Hance-Briscoe and Johnson are now suing the bar’s owners.

In a lawsuit filed in Dallas County, the two men claim they stopped for a drink on August 26.

Johnson ordered the Flaming Pineapple, an Everclear cocktail, unaware that it came with a fiery garnished lime.

“When we were introduced to it, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cute.’ Cool. It’s on fire,” Johnson said.

Hance-Briscoe took a photo before “the bartender added more Everclear to the drink and lit the drink itself with a torch,” according to the lawsuit.

“He said, ‘I’ll give it a little more,’ and lit the Everclear on fire in our direction,” Hance-Briscoe said.

The drink ignited, shattering the glass and spreading the fire to the couple, according to the lawsuit.

It was a moment of panic, pain and terror, the couple said, that felt like hours as they tried to put out the flames.

Hance-Briscoe’s injuries are the worst.

“They literally had to cut off my bra because it had melted into my skin,” Hance-Briscoe said.

Both were rushed to the Parkland Health burn unit.

Johnson’s beard saved some of his skin, but he was hospitalized for several days.

Hance-Briscoe was there for seven weeks, received three skin grafts and contracted sepsis, affecting her ability to walk.

“A small restaurant choice can make a big, life-changing difference,” Hance-Briscoe said.

Twisted Trick has since closed its doors.

Their lawyers responded to the couple’s lawsuit, denying the allegations and saying they failed to provide facts to support them.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has no rules or regulations regarding the serving of ignited beverages.

Hance-Briscoe says there should be.

“I remember saying as I got into the ambulance, ‘You can’t separate me from him. He’s all I have,” Hance-Briscoe said.

The two are now both walking through this chapter through the pain together.

A GoFundMe An account was set up to help the couple with their mounting medical bills.
