W. Michigan loses first game to No. 2 Eagles; MSU sweeps Canisius

No. 14 Western Michigan (3-1-0) lost for the first time this season after trailing 2-0 in the first half against No. 2 Boston College on Saturday in Boston.

The Eagles, who have four drafted NHL players and Central Scouting’s No. 1 2025 draft prospect, James Hagens, scored three goals in the third period to beat the Broncos, 4-2.

Michigan State 4, Canisius 1

Michigan State also won 3-0 on Friday with Trey Augustine stopping 15 shots for the shutout.

Grand Rapids 5, Lehigh Valley 2

The Grand Rapids Griffins improved to 5-1 with a 5-2 victory Saturday against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Amadeus Lombardi had two goals and an assist, Cross Hanas scored his first goal of the season and Sebastian Cossa made 31 saves for the Griffins.

Grand Rapids’ 5-1 start is tied for the best start in franchise history with the 2000-01 team.

Hay, Hall of Fame director, dies

Former Chicago Blackhawks forward and Hall of Famer Bill Hay has died. He was 88 years old.

Hockey Canada confirmed Hay’s death in a statement Saturday. Hay served as president and chief operating officer of the organization from 1990 to 1995. The cause of death was not provided.

“Bill Hay lived a remarkable hockey life that reflects the best of our sport,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “The National Hockey League family mourns his passing and extends its deepest condolences to his family and his many friends in the hockey world. »

Hay played eight seasons in the NHL with Chicago. He was named NHL Rookie of the Year for the 1959-60 season, when he recorded 24 goals and 30 assists in 70 games.

The Saskatoon center helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 1961. He had 11 goals and 48 assists in the regular season and two goals and five assists in 12 playoff games.

Hay has 113 goals and 273 assists in 506 career NHL games. He was a two-time All-Star before retiring in 1967.

He remained in hockey after his playing career, serving as president and CEO of the Calgary Flames from 1991 to 1995, alongside his role with Hockey Canada.

He was also a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee from 1980 to 1997 and a member of the Hall’s board of directors from 1995 until his retirement in 2013, including 15 years as president.

Hay was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2015.

Islanders sign forward Martin

The New York Islanders agreed to a one-year contract with veteran forward Matt Martin on Saturday.

Martin, 35, a fan favorite for his physical play, had been skating with the Islanders without a contract during a professional tryout during training camp and since the start of the season.

He signed with Toronto as a free agent in 2016 and spent two seasons with the Maple Leafs before being acquired by the Islanders in the summer of 2018.
