Mid-gen refresh like PS5 Pro not necessary, says Xbox boss

Phil Spencer, the boss of Xbox think mid-generation hardware upgrades like PS5 Pro no longer offer anything unique and are useless. The executive appeared in a series of interviews this week, and in at least two interviews we spotted, he suggested that the benefits of the PS5 Pro aren’t as important as its price.

Mid-gen updates like PS5 Pro won’t grow the market, says Xbox’s Phil Spencer

In an interview with the rolling stoneSpencer was asked about Xbox’s plans for a mid-gen upgrade like the PS5 Pro, in response to which he said the technology had advanced to a point where it was becoming increasingly difficult to show significant improvements midway through a console’s lifecycle.

“Does a new device really give you a unique on-screen experience in any way? (It’s) less like the old days, moving from the original Xbox to the 360; it was from standard definition to high definition. Now, (it’s) harder to show the benefits,” Spencer said.

In a separate interview with BloombergSpencer seemed to throw some shade at Sony, arguing that “we’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.” “To reach new players, we have to be creative and adaptive to new economic modelsnew devices, new means of access,” Spencer said.
