Verrelli, a professor at Laurentian University, announced she would run as an NDP candidate in Sudbury in the next federal election, “fighting to hold off Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives.”

The riding is now held by Liberal MP Viviane Lapointe. Its Liberals hold power in Ottawa as a minority government. By law, a federal election must be held next year, but with the Liberals holding only a minority of seats in Parliament, the government could fall at any time, forcing an election.

According to polls, Poilievre and the Conservatives are headed for a strong majority government if an election were held now.

In a video statement, Verrelli shared his vision for the upcoming campaign. To listen to his video statement, go to youtu.be/Tl0KnX5L2Uo.

“I believe deeply in the people of Sudbury and our ability to build something better,” Verrelli said. “That’s why I’m excited to announce that I will be running again for the NDP.

As the NDP candidate in 2021, Verrelli placed second, with 13,569 votes, or 29.5 percent of the votes cast. Lapointe won 15,871 votes, or 34.5 percent of the ballots cast.

Ian Symington, running again for the Conservatives, received 12,747 votes.

Since 2021, Verrelli said Canadians face serious challenges: unaffordable housing, stagnant wages and “uncontrolled climate catastrophe.” New Democrats know that a Pollièvre government will only make the situation worse,” she declared.

“It’s a powerful thing when a community comes together with hope in its heart and a shared vision for a better future,” Verrelli said.

She said she plans to bring those priorities to Ottawa if elected.

“Over the last three years, we have seen what New Democrats can do with just a few dozen MPs,” Verrelli said. “Imagine what we can achieve with even more of us. Together we will create a future we can all be proud of.

The Sudbury New Democrats will hold a nomination meeting, open to all, on Saturday, December 7. Details are available by RSVPing to [email protected].
