Growing religious tensions behind Brampton man’s murder, victim’s family says

Rabinder Singh Malhi, of Brampton, died on November 9 following an incident in Brampton.

The wife of a murdered Brampton man believes growing animosity between Sikhs and Hindus led to her husband’s death.

In a message posted on a GoFundMe On the page, Jaspreet Malhi said her husband was a “victim of a crime rooted in hate” and appealed for community support.

Rabinder Singh Malhi, 52, died from injuries sustained at a home in Caledon on November 9.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the victim was found injured at the scene on Deer Ridge Trail and transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Ontario Provincial Police did not comment on the possible motive or provide a cause of death.

However, a statement issued on behalf of the family said the victim was stabbed following a religious argument.

Jaspreet Malhi called her husband “a man of peace and respect” and said the senseless nature of his death had compounded the grief of his loss.

“As tensions rise in Brampton, misunderstandings and animosity around religion and identity have become worryingly prevalent,” she said.

An organization called Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) said the rise in rhetoric had created “a climate of hostility”, adding that pro-Khalistan activist Rabinder Singh Malhi became the target of those who disagreed with his opinions.

Jaspreet Malhi said she set out to raise money to help deal with the “immense emotional and financial burdens: the costs of the funeral and the challenge of finding stability as we move forward without him.”

So far, $67,000 has been raised through the campaign.

Ontario Provincial Police are continuing their investigation but announced two people have been arrested.

Rajinder Kumar, 47, of Caledon, is charged with second-degree murder and Sheetal Verma, 35, also of Caledon, is charged with obstruction of justice.
