Charles Kelley calls getting sober the ‘best decision’ he ever made

Lady a singer Charles Kelley I look back at the moment he decided to stop drinking in Hulu’s new docuseries It’s the whole country.

“Success is a double-edged sword, that’s for sure. You know, once you know what it feels like and once you’ve been there, it’s a drug in itself,” Kelley, 43, said in the second episode, which began airing on Friday the 15th. november. a lot of doubts can arise and it’s just a lot of, I think, keeping your ego in check. He added: “I went to this place in Utah for a month, and we were kind of talking to our team about, you know, ‘What do we say?’ Why are we canceling the tour?’

The group, also with Hillary Scott And David Haywood, postponed their concerts in August 2022 after Kelley completes his hospital treatment. Speaking in It’s the whole countryKelley noted that it was important to be “more honest” and transparent with the band’s fans about its struggles.

Kelley was married to Cassie McConnell since 2009. During an appearance in 2023 on CBS MorningsMcConnell, 41, revealed she plans to “meet with a divorce lawyer” before Kelley goes to rehab. Since Kelley got sober, his wife has been “really proud” of his commitment. (The couple share son Ward, born in 2016.)

“When he was in rehab and I went there for family week, one of the first messages you get is, ‘You’re going to have to do this much work here.’ And I remember being so angry,” McConnell said at the time. “Like, you did that.” And now I have to do all this work too? But…it affects every person in this family system. So, I could have chosen not to do the work, but then I have to live with how I was affected and not healed. So whether Charles and I were married or not, whether I saw him for the rest of my life, I still had to deal with what I had experienced.

Kelley further revealed in It’s the whole country that getting sober is “the best decision he’s ever made in his life.”

Several of Hollywood’s biggest stars have spoken candidly about their sobriety journeys over the years. “It wasn’t my intention to share my story so much. It kind of took on this thing where I felt like I wanted to be honest with fans and people about what I was going through,” Kelley said. “And it kind of snowballed until you started to see that people actually connected to the story and it could help them in some way.”

The musician added: “I just think it’s a very common occurrence and we all struggle with it. At this stage of my career and this stage of my life, I also want to be able to give something back, in a positive way, even if it’s just a little bit of encouragement.
