Former Prescott Valley gym owner accused of sexually abusing children

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — The former owner of a Prescott Valley gym faces multiple charges of dangerous crimes against a child, including allegations of sexual abuse of a child under 15 years old.

Prosecutors charged Michael Craig Andrew, 47, this summer after a 14-year-old girl accused him of sexual abuse. He was released on bail over the summer after being arrested in July when the charges were first filed.

Those charges were dropped, but he now faces new charges.

He was arrested at an arraignment Friday and is being held on $75,000 bail.

Andrew faces 15 charges, including sexual abuse, indecent exposure and child molestation. Court documents show the allegations date back to 2015. He has pleaded not guilty.

In court Friday, prosecutors said Andrew and the victim’s father had been friends for more than 20 years. Andrew was accused of contacting the father after he was first released on bail.

The judge said Friday that if he was released again, he would not be able to contact the victim or her family and he must be supervised when spending time with anyone under 18.

Andrew co-owned a local gym, Arizona Dreams Gymnastics Academy. Court documents allege that’s where some of the abuse took place.

Melanie Jayne said her 14-year-old daughter had been going to the gym for three years and she said it was a complete shock.

“We were all caught off guard,” Jayne said. “Especially for my daughter because she’s known him for several years now, and when she first found out about him, she kept saying but he’s so nice. It was truly heartbreaking.

After the allegations came to light, Andrew’s wife, Summer, posted on Facebook that Andrew was no longer the owner of the gym. She denied he was ever a trainer and claimed he only opened the gym and worked at the front desk.

Arizona’s family has reached out to Summer but has not yet received a response.

However, Jayne and other parents who contacted Arizona’s family said there was more to the story.

“He was there every week, and so he wasn’t just at the front desk,” Jayne said. “He would come out on the floor and talk to the kids. And there’s a parents’ evening on the weekend, and he was in charge of that.

She said she’s worried about the gym’s future in a sport where trust between kids and coaches is so important. Jayne said the gym is the only reputable one in town, causing many families to stay.

“Gymnastics is an intimate sport in itself,” Jayne said. “These girls wear leotards and do the splits and you’re there at least three to four days a week for four and a half to five hours at a time. Her innocence is now taken because she trusted him.

Andrew will have a pretrial conference on January 6, where a court date will be chosen.
