Well-imagined flops and pardons in Saturday’s races at Caulfield and Newcastle

Here’s our assessment of some of the most popular beaten runners from Saturday’s races at Caulfield and Newcastleand whether you should forgive or forget them.

FORGIVE

CATOGGIO ($5) – Caulfield R4 (1400m)

On a day when it was almost impossible to lead all the way, McNeil sat on the Catoggio, usually coasting. Unfortunately, this gesture resulted in the horse not holding onto the obstacle at a crucial moment. The 3-year-old trained by Waterhouse and Bott found the line well once clear, but the damage was done.

PHARARI ($3.40) – Caulfield R5 (1100m)

Back in class and back around a corner, Pharari was unlucky not to finish closer to Kin, or even beat her. She found herself running in a restricted room when the winner had full momentum.

TOBEORNOTTOBE ($5) – Caulfield R6 (1200m)

Deep into her build-up, Tobeornottobe was excellent here hitting the breeze from a wide goal. She almost defied the obvious pattern of the day, but was brought down by a horse who took advantage of a nice choke on the obstacle and did no work during the race. She’s got some spice was unlucky in the same race and it’s worth forgiving him for his unplaced effort.

AELIANA ($3.20) – Caulfield R7 (1600m)

She really zoomed in late, but the crab in the last turn cost her dearly. The flat she hit around the 600m mark saw her find herself in a small duel of collisions at the start of the straight and she simply didn’t have time to fully recover.

JIMMYSSTAR ($3.20) – Caulfield R9 (1400m)

One of the most obvious forgiveness runs you’ll ever see. “Jimmy” ended up in the coffin from the first barrier and Lane had nowhere to go when the leader fell back to his knees. It was a gruesome watch.

HIGH BALLS ($2F) – Newcastle R4 (1600m)

I just did it harder than the winner and covered a lot more ground to get home. Exploded outside late but unable to collect himself Dazzling legend. If he completes the same route as the winner, the result is probably different.

WYCLIF ($5) – Newcastle R9 (2300m)

Failed to beat a home runner at The Beauford but had a long preparation and jockey Jason Collett came back and said he might have just finished it. He will now be in the paddock and will enjoy a break.

FLOP (SAC)

SAFE ($5.50) – Caulfield R1 (1700m)

He doesn’t run badly but the explosiveness that we saw in him during his first two starts has disappeared from this preparation. It has now launched at $2.30, $2.70 and $5.50 in three starts this campaign and we will be betting around it next start in a similar grade.

EYE OF THE EAGLE ($5.50) – Caulfield R3 (1400m)

Eye Of The Eagle enjoyed a good run (put away with cover around midfield) and was introduced at the right time but just headed home. Looks like he’s had enough for the preparation.

EXPRESS CABLE ($3.80F) – Newcastle R3 (1300m)

Jockey Jason Collett gave Express Cable the perfect ride from Saturday’s inner highway barrier. He hit the front at the 300m mark and it looked like he had just thought about it when Blue Guitar shot straight past him.

HAPPY YOU THINK SO ($3.80F) – Newcastle R6 (1850m)

His last victory came in September of last year in a Class 1 at the provincial championships. That’s a long time between drinks now and he had all he could in Saturday’s contest. He seems to need a downgrade,

THE JURY IS OUT

COLEMAN ($3) – Caulfield R4 (1400m)

He’s surely gone to the paddock now, but it remains to be seen whether Laurie (or perhaps another trainer based on the recent ownership dispute) will be able to get Coleman back to his best. It was a difficult day for the leaders, but it was a terribly disappointing end to the campaign.

PRIVATE EYE ($7) – Newcastle R8 (1300m)

I can’t completely fire this horse because he’s been such a warrior over the years, but he was a little disappointing on Saturday. He shot wide and had to carry the heaviest weight, but he was far from home in The hunter.
