National Trust appeals rejection of Trelissick car park extension

The National Trust has appealed a decision to refuse a permit application to expand one of its car parks in Cornwall.

The trust has applied to increase parking at its Trelissick estate in Feock, near Truro, to meet “growing visitor demand”.

He also said it would help prevent cars from queuing, which is known to cause traffic to back up on the B3289 during summer peak times.

In May, a Cornwall Council committee refused permission for the trust to increase parking at the site from 104 spaces to 524.

The application said it would amend the current car park to include 299 spaces and create an additional car park of 225 spaces on a wooded area and orchard on Dicky Lane, across the road, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The plans included a pedestrian crossing leading from the new car park to the house, gardens and riverside park.

Councilors on the planning committee said they were “concerned” that the plans would lead to traffic jams and delays as well as passengers and emergency vehicles missing ferry crossings.

The committee heard the plan received more than 120 public objections, of which only three were in favor.

The National Trust said: “The proposal will ensure that Trelissick Gardens, as one of Cornwall’s major tourist attractions, is able to safely and sustainably cater for the growing number of visitors to the area and residents living in the area. region.

“In doing so, the proposal will bring material benefits to the regional economy, including through the retention of its employees, who will benefit from a safer, less stressful and more accessible workplace.

A planning inspector has been appointed to oversee the appeal. All those who had previously objected were given notice on November 6 and all new representations must be made by December 9.
