Gilbert Gardiner’s horses to follow or forgive on Thousand Guineas Day at Caulfield

Herald Sun racing writer Gilbert Gardiner exercises a rule over One thousand guineas race day at Caulfield.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

TUVALU (unclassified Race 9)

It was his first place since winning the Listed Wangoom Handicap in May and he fought valiantly against in-form opposition for the race. Wide without cover, hitting into the wind, approaching the home turn but down well to run fifth. It should be tough to beat second place in something like the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in a fortnight’s time.

BENAGIL (unplaced, Race 7)

Smart filly and certainly one to watch this autumn, if she hits the paddock now, but taking on the boys’ Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) in two weeks’ time could be a tempting proposition. Fillies have won the Sandown Guineas in three of the last five years. Benagil unlucky in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas last Saturday, could not break away early enough in the straight to challenge the winner.

GRINZINGER POD (fourth, Race 6)

I followed the eventual winner, RED JASMINEin the straight line, but could not accelerate as quickly to continue the work. The three-year-old filly, only second last Saturday, was successful all the way and could be a factor in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on November 30. ON DISPLAY (3rd) a real eye-catcher on a potentially similar course, the filly Fastnet Rock finished with power first after last in the race.

CIGAR FLICK (unplaced, Race 10)

Ready to win third place with even luck and a good barrier. Billed late to Flemington first against big odds, then cruel by a wide barrier at Caulfield last Saturday. Well closed but too much ground to make up and finished fifth, beaten less than two lengths. Cigar film recorded the fastest final 400m and 200m sections of the entire meeting. Miss Roumbini (3rd) impressed at first, should benefit from good preparation.

MIRAVAL ROSE (third, Race 5)

Solid return even if it is not completely suitable for 1100m. Rose Miraval followed the speed and would only be overtaken late by CLOSE And PHARARI. Sticked to the task to hold third and only beat by a length. She is yet to win second, but the Doveton Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in two weeks’ time could suit her. Miraval Rose won the Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) third on the corresponding card last spring.

FORGIVE

JIMMYSSTAR (unplaced, Race 9)

The first barrier was always going to be a trap and ended up being one, with Jimmystar held on in the straight and arrived at the post without any difficulty. Forget he did the trick. CHARMING STONE (not placed) in a similar boat, never had clear air.

AELIANA (second, Race 7)

He’s not the first and certainly not the last Sydney horse to struggle around the Caulfield bend. The 50m required to balance on the straight proved costly. A slick good thing and better for the experience. This is a serious prospect.

SHE’S GOT PIZZAZZ (unplaced, Race 5)

Lost the momentum held in the straight between 350 m and 200 m. Picked up late to run fifth and beaten only 2-1/4 lengths. Peter Moody and Katherine ColemanThis trained filly came slowly out of the barriers and took an awkward step near the 600m mark. Only second, this should naturally improve after the race.

PHARARI (second, Race 5)

Ran into midfield with cover to avoid a strong northerly headwind, but paid the price as he was unable to get off his heels while recovering to finish properly. Final winner CLOSEmounted by Jamie Kahguard Pharari in a pocket and forced jockey Damien Lane to move back towards the rail. Kin was just a bit stronger late, with momentum, and held a margin over Pharari.

TIFFANY VALENTINE (unplaced, Race 2)

Form of racing against the mare, with all potential speed horses excluded from the contest. I tried to work on the image but I was crowded behind and between the horses. Only second and beaten 1-1/4 lengths in a blanket finish.
