Rajasthan Police warns of cyber scams linked to wedding invitations on WhatsApp

The cybercrime wing of the Rajasthan Police has warned of fraudsters sending wedding invitations to access mobile devices to withdraw money from victims’ accounts.

Director General of Cyber Crime of Rajasthan Police Hemant Priyadarshi told India Today TV that the invitations are sent to people in APK format and once downloaded, infect mobile phones and give complete access to devices to fraudsters .

“Malicious APK files are automatically installed on the phone and fraudsters then gain access to personal data and messages,” he said.

The officer explained that fraudsters use the device to transfer money to their accounts by also accessing bank OTPs.

He advised people to enable two-step verification on their WhatsApp.

“Apart from this, if the APK file is installed on your phone by mistake, immediately cut off the internet connection. Also freeze your bank account for safety precautions,” Priyadarshi said.

He noted that several cases of WhatsApp invite frauds had been reported in Rajasthan over the past few days.
