Halloween Costume Golf Event at Merry-Hill Golf Club

Ghosts and ghouls put their golf skills to the test at Merry-Hill Golf Club’s annual Scary-Hill event on Sunday.

“This is our annual Halloween event that we hold every year on the last Sunday in October. Super family friendly. The staff and golfers are all very excited and looking forward to it,” said Merry-Hill Golf Club Director Abbey Steers.

It’s not just a normal day on the course. Golfers are encouraged to don their best costume for Halloween.

“I just found something fun to wear,” said golfer Courtney Benvenuti.

“It’s more fun,” said Dan Benvenuti, a golfer.

“It’s more fun because when you’re rolling down the hills you can trip, because you have to be very careful if you’re wearing a long suit,” said Deacon Benvenuti, a golfer.

“I thought it would be fun to dress up. It’s also my birthday today, so it’s my birthday party,” said Murray Tawse, a golfer.

“I’m just here to have a good time and celebrate her birthday with our friends,” said Dalyce Love-Tawse, a golfer.

Peter Dietrich dressed up as a Toronto Maple Leafs player while carrying a calendar set for the month of April.

“I’m actually a big Leafs fan. But we’re outside, it’s cold. That’s probably where they’ll be in April so,” Dietrich said.

“I think it’s super fun. I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life, I would say. Seeing everyone dressed up in costumes is probably my favorite thing. So being a big banana is great for the kids,” said Merry-Hill Golf Club staff member Alisha Krysko.

Candy stations for candy or treats have been placed on selected holes. There were also a few challenges, such as the farthest tee shot using a broom, the farthest tee shot using a marshmallow for the ball, and the longest putt at the using a plastic axe.

While the annual event brings a lot of fun to the course towards the end of the season, it also raises funds each year to be donated to the Waterloo Region Food Bank.

“So we have a 50/50 drawing and we also have a raffle prize, a door prize inside,” Steers said.

The golf season is coming to an end and Steers hopes to stay open until the second week of November. But I said it would all depend on the weather.
