Tyler ISD will follow new voting system for Smith County Board of Assessment

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – The Tyler ISD School Board has a new voting system to elect Smith County Appraisal District board members.

Tyler ISD Board President Wade Washmon said the board used to appoint three people to the Smith County Board of Assessment and now state law requires that votes are weighted between tax authorities. The school board voted for two people.

“Usually we just appoint people, and that’s it,” Washom said. “This time it’s a little more public and, of course, as a board we don’t do any business behind closed doors, we discuss everything, so here we have to discuss how we are going to distribute our votes.”

This case does not concern the vote of the taxpayers themselves, but only concerns the school board.

Watch Washmon’s full interview below to learn more about the change and get a first look at what the schedule might look like for the upcoming school year.
