HC formed high-level committee to review Adani power deal

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2024 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered the authorities
concerned to form a high-level committee to review the signed electricity agreement
between the government and the Adani Group of India and submit a report to
the court within two months of its formation.

The HC also directed the authorities to submit all documents relating to
negotiations between the two parties on a power agreement in court within a month.

A division bench of the High Court comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice
Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order after holding a hearing on a summons
petition filed by Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Md Abdul Qaium.

The petition was filed on November 13, challenging the legality of the electricity agreement.
signed between the government and the Adani Group of India. End the agreement
unequal, unjust and contrary to the interest of the country, the petitioner
had advocated for a modification of the agreement on the basis of fairness and justice.

The petition also pleads for the cancellation of the agreement if the Adani group refuses to
modify the agreement.

The petitioner had sent a legal notice to Bangladesh Power Development
(BPDB) President and Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Energy and
Mineral Resources, asking them to review or cancel the deal with Adani Group
in three days. The opinion having not been heard, the applicant filed a request with the
the High Court.
