Instagram rolls out option to reset recommendations

Instagram is testing a new feature that lets users reset their content recommendations on the platform when they need a “fresh start.”

The feature, available to all users, including teens, will clear user-recommended content on the platform’s Explore, Reels and Feed pages. Instagram announced it on Tuesday.

Users will also have the option to review the accounts they follow to determine if they want to unfollow those sharing unwanted content, the social media platform added.

Once the reset is complete, new user recommendations will be re-personalized over time.

“There are a ton of things to see on Instagram and we want to highlight the things that will interest you the most… But sometimes we make mistakes, and I want to acknowledge that,” Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram ‘Instagram, said in a video Tuesday.

Mosseri warned users who perform the reset should expect temporary changes to their experiences on the platform.

“I want to be clear: This is a great thing to do. “It’s going to make your Instagram a lot less interesting at first, because we’re going to treat you like we don’t know anything about you and your interests and it’s going to take a while to relearn them,” he said.

“So it’s not something I recommend doing all the time, but if you find yourself in a place where you really don’t feel good about your experience, it gives you a way out.”

The feature is expected to roll out globally soon, Instagram said.

It aims to build on options Instagram already offers, including a button that lets users click whether they’re “interested” or “not interested.” The platform already offers a word search feature that allows users to hide content that contains specific words or phrases in the caption.

Teen users can also switch to a “follow feed” where they see content from the accounts they follow in chronological order, while the platform’s “Close Friends” story features give users authority over who sees their stories.

The announcement comes almost two months after Instagram announced a set of sweeping changes to teen accounts intended to strengthen security and give parents more control over content settings.

“Instagram Teen accounts” are now private by default for all users under 18, and users with these accounts must manually accept new followers and can only receive posts, tagged or mentioned by people they follow.

Instagram also announced Tuesday the creation of a new page in its Transparency Center, aimed at helping teens and parents understand the social media platform’s approach to ensuring age-appropriate content.

Instagram and other social media sites are facing increasing scrutiny from lawmakers and parents over the impact of social media on the safety and mental health of young people.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is facing dozens of trials alleging that the platforms were created to maximize young users’ time by using features that could lead to mental health issues.
