New furniture and wall decorations have been purchased for the gynecology and early pregnancy assessment unit at Royal Preston Hospital.

Charity Baby Beat stepped in to add soft furnishings and art installations, worth over £15,000, following a extensive recent renovation of the unit.

The charity says it aims for the unit to have a “less clinical environment”.

Matron of gynecology services at RPHDavid Styles, said: “There is a need to make the unit a calm and less clinical space. It welcomes around 8,000 patients per year, most of whom are patients in early pregnancy.

“Many of them come with their partner because they have an early pregnancy emergency and
are potentially experiencing or about to learn that they have lost their baby. We see about seven diagnosed losses every day.

“The new walk-in assessment area, for which Baby Beat purchased three recliners, is intended for patients on IV fluids, such as hyperemesis patients, i.e. patients with severe pregnancy disorders. They could be in the assessment zone all day, so comfort should again be a priority.

Baby Beat fundraising manager Joanna Allitt said: “We are proud to fund the wall art, recliners and new seating in the waiting room of the refurbished unit. Anything that can be done to make the presence of patients and their partners a little better is an important thing and we know it is something very important to David and all the staff on the unit.
