Detroit Red Wings remain Stanley Cup finalists in 3-2 overtime loss

THE Detroit Red Wings showed they can play with pace and the puck when facing the Stanley Cup finalist last season.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers made their only appearance of the season on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena, facing the Wings back-to-back. The game was settled 8 seconds into overtime, 3-2 for the Oilers, when Leon Draisaitl scored his second of the game.

The Wings were able to take the lead on goals from JT Compher – with another memorable play from Patrick Kane – and Andrew Copp, but Draisaitl scored in the second period and set up Evan Bouchard in the third as the Oilers crowded around Cam Talbot.

LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS: Red Wings’ inability to maintain momentum threatens to kill another season

Copp, who also had an assist, was called for tripping with 1:51 left, leading to overtime.

Playing with the puck

The Wings scored on their first shot on goal, 3:28 into the period, when Kane set up Compher for a 20-foot wrist shot that eluded senior winger Calvin Pickard. Finally, after a series of games where they were heavily outshot, the Wings played with the puck and shot after it, leading to a 10-1 lead. When Joe Veleno and Corey Perry faced off with 4:39 left in the period, the Oilers had just recorded their second shot on Talbot. The Wings finished the first period with a 13-5 advantage in shots, two more than the total number of shots they had against the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

New look, no look

The Wings were coming off a 5-3 loss Saturday to the Buffalo Sabres, which led to some roster changes. Defenders Olli Määttä and Albert Johansson were inserted into the third pairing, while Justin Holl and Erik Gustafsson were removed. Up front, Copp was moved to play with Compher and Kane, which also meant Marco Kasper and Jonatan Berggren gained Vladimir Tarasenko as a teammate. The first goal was scored by the second line: Compher won the draw and Copp headed to the boards to fight for the puck. He ended up sending a pass to Kane, who, despite facing the glass, managed to throw a perfectly connected pass to Compher.

Give and take

Draisaitl, who had rounded the Detroit net several times, scored his fifth goal of the season when his pass was deflected by Määttä. It was at 8:46. Within a minute, the Wings regained their lead. Jeff Petry fired a shot from the right circle which Copp deflected and turned into his fourth goal of the season, with Kane also getting an assist, giving him his second multi-point game in three outings.
