Monitoring your diet and lifestyle can be difficult, especially when we travel. For diabetic people, it is essential to manage their sugar levels at all times. With proper preparation, diabetics can stay healthy even while traveling.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Pramod Tripathi, Founder of Freedom From Diabetes said, “Diabetes management becomes another problem for those who travel a lot. As it requires attention and care, comprehensive planning and the right medication become crucial. You cannot skip meals or eat unfamiliar dishes as this can increase your sugar levels.

Do’s and don’ts when traveling

Prepare diabetes-friendly snacks: Pack healthy options like nuts, seeds, protein bars or whole grain crackers. By having your snacks, you won’t have to resort to unhealthy alternatives.

Choose foods with a low glycemic index: Whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, and berries are good choices if you want to avoid an unexpected spike in your blood sugar.

Stay hydrated: It is essential to consume plenty of water. Limit your caffeine intake and avoid sugary drinks, as dehydration can worsen blood sugar control.

Balance your meals: Combine protein, healthy fats and fiber with each meal to slow digestion and keep blood sugar levels stable.

Snack wisely: Opt for raw vegetables, nuts or small portions of fruit instead of processed or sugary snacks.

Avoid skipping meals: Glucose instability is caused by irregular meal timing. Even when you’re on the go, stick to your schedule.

Limit fast food: Fast food is convenient but often high in refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Whenever possible, choose fresh or grilled foods.
