Eagles player’s nightmare season gets worse thanks to injury that requires surgery

The 2024 season is one Eagles defensive winger Bryce Huff would probably prefer to forget, and that feeling might persist after learning he would miss time due to a lingering injury.

According to a league source, Huff is expected to have surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, which will sideline him for the foreseeable future. There is optimism he will return later this season, with the procedure expected to improve wrist functionality. The injury initially occurred before the Eagles’ Week 9 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. During the warm-up, Huff felt discomfort in his wrist. Coaches taped his wrist, but he played only six snaps during the game.

Huff saw a slight increase in snaps against the Dallas Cowboys, but it was clear his role had shifted to the back of the Edge Rushers’ rotation. The decision to undergo surgery gives Huff the opportunity to recover and refocus off the field, with the potential to make an impact during the playoffs.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed the news Wednesday in a press conference and addressed Huff’s impending absence.

“Hopefully this will help him get more features in that hand, and we’ll see as the season goes on,” Sirianni said. “I can’t say enough about how he tried to get through it and keep doing it. I hope this helps.

Huff, who signed a three-year, $51.1 million contract this offseason, has struggled to generate sacks this year. In 10 games, he recorded 2.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, eight pressures and three tackles for loss.

Without Huff out, linebacker Jalyx Hunt an increase in workload is expected. Hunt, the team’s third-round pick in this year’s draft, started on special teams but saw increased time on defense, outplaying Huff in games against the Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys. However, Hunt did not play a defensive game in Thursday’s win over the Washington Commanders. Hunt was expected to be a developmental player as he continues to learn more of the edge rusher position after starting his college career as a safety. However, his quickness with offensive linemen in his limited time on the field has been remarkable, with Hunt having one sack and three tackles so far this season.
