Snow made roads slippery Wednesday and Thursday morning

WEATHER FORECAST: Gray, windy and dry Thursday

Snow started in the Twin Cities before sunrise Wednesday, when air temperatures began to drop below freezing, but roads were in pretty good shape until the evening commute.

In fact, the freezing/thawing cycle of the soil is delayed by the air temperature. It takes some time for the ground to catch up to colder air temperatures, especially during the day.

Well, after several hours of subzero air temperatures on Wednesday, the ground began to freeze. Add to that a snow drift for a few hours around and during the evening commute, leading to snow accumulation on our roads and slippery conditions.

The exact opposite will likely happen on Thursday, as air temperatures start the day above freezing, but the ground is still frozen, so our snow will take a little time to melt on our roads and our grassy surfaces.
