GlobalFoundries to establish semiconductor ecosystem in West Bengal | Kolkata News

Calcutta: listed on Nasdaq Global Foundries (GF) plans to create a set semiconductor ecosystem in Bengal, which will include maintenance and R&D.
The cutting-edge collaborative unit, which will be called the GF Kolkata Power Centerwas announced by the White House following a meeting between outgoing US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi last September.
GF Vice Chairman Amitava Das, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Innovation 2024, organized by CII Eastern Region on Thursday, said the tech giant is planning a semiconductor servicing unit here. “A lot of semiconductor units are coming to India, so you also need servicing,” he added.
Earlier, IT Minister Babul Supriyo had said that GF had seen land plots in STPI for its project. GF officials, including Das, met Supriyo earlier this week. “We will talk to universities to find talent,” Das said.
The semiconductor servicing industry includes companies that provide services for the design, manufacturing, testing and servicing of semiconductors and semiconductor devices.
American GF leaders visited Webel last October and November and, with Webel’s support, organized a number of conferences, symposia and workshops at Calcutta University and other educational institutions.
On Thursday, Webel Managing Director Sanjay Kumar Das said the state was in the process of setting up a GPU-based data center. in Siliguri. The GPU is an electronic circuit specialized for performing specific types of calculation. The data center is expected to be fully operational by next month.
With a computing power of approximately 160 petaflops, the data center will provide expanded capacity to meet various needs. This facility will also serve start-ups, MSMEs, institutions and researchers, he said.
