Lions have perfect participation in practice, with TE on track to return

ALLEN PARK – The Detroit Lions counted on everyone in Thursday’s practice, including injured tight end Sam LaPorta (shoulder).

LaPorta missed last week’s game with a sprained AC joint suffered in the team’s win over the Houston Texans. But Dan Campbell said he feels good about LaPorta’s chances of facing the Indianapolis Colts on the road this weekend.

“Yeah, so again, tour today (Wednesday), but I think it’s a trend,” Campbell said. “It’s questionable for LaPorta. I think the trend is in the right direction.

Although LaPorta’s return to the lineup would be a big boost, the offense was firing on all cylinders in last week’s win. They scored touchdowns on the team’s first seven possessions, becoming the first NFL team to do so since 2007 (Patriots).

Brock Wright saw an increased role, catching a touchdown in the process. Shane Zylstra was also moved up the order, getting a 22-yarder on the team’s first play from scrimmage to set the tone last week.

And former fifth-round pick James Mitchell saw his first action of the season. Campbell praised the tight end for seizing the opportunity and the role he was given in the blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Carlton Davis III also continued to practice and play despite his broken thumb. The starting cornerback, who has a large club in his hand to protect the injured thumb, was participating in drills during the open period.

Keeping players fresh has been a key goal for the Lions heading into this busy stretch of the schedule. Sunday’s game against the Colts will be the first of three in 11 days, with Thanksgiving and another Thursday night game on the horizon.

The Lions held a walk-through at practice Wednesday dating back to Week 10.

“Yeah, I think it’s been good for us, and we – every year has been different for us, and you have to choose what you think is best for your team at that time, that year, and so every year it kind of evolves,” Campbell said. “I mean, last year we were still going; we were still practicing pretty well on Wednesdays and Thursdays. were a little younger The core of this team is now. older, more mature.

“We’re not old, but we’ve played a lot of football together, and so they kind of know what to expect, they’ve played together quite a long time, the staff has been together, myself, all that, so I feel like it’s something we can handle, and if you can handle it, that helps.
