No, the United States should not forgive Ukraine’s debts

President Joe Biden began his presidential campaign by promising to eliminate $20,000 in student loans for borrowers nationwide. He ends his mandate by seeking to Cancel billion dollars in Ukraine’s debt because of its war with Russia. After years of record inflation, caused in part by irresponsible government spending and the implementation of policies that added billions of dollars to the national debtBiden’s attempt to cancel billions of dollars in loans to Ukraine is just the latest disastrous budget decision by the president.

Something is happening in the Biden administration regarding Ukraine. This goes beyond simply trying to help a country repel a ruthless aggressor. We have now progressed to the point of jeopardizing the economic sustainability of the country. With billions of dollars in debt, we cannot afford to forgive Ukraine’s billions of dollars of debt. The senator Rand Paul (R-KY) underlined this Wednesday by forcing the Senate to vote on its joint project resolution “to prevent the Biden administration from making Ukraine’s debt the responsibility of the American people.”

“Americans across the United States are struggling with high prices and their own debt thanks to four years of the Biden-Harris administration, as the U.S. national debt has reached a record $36 trillion, and we cannot afford a $4.65 billion gift to Ukraine,” Paul said in a press release.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, most logical people understood that it was a mistake. Initially, and perhaps reluctantly, people understood why the United States offered to provide aid in the form of loans and weapons for Ukraine’s defense. After all, Russia was the aggressor, and invading a sovereign nation was morally, ethically, and geopolitically wrong. However, at some point during the war between Russia and Ukraine (two countries with a centuries-long history of conflict and war), Democrats made protecting Ukraine the taxpayer’s financial responsibility American.

As tragic as the situation in Ukraine is, it is not the responsibility of American taxpayers to fund its sovereignty. This is especially true given the country’s debt. Paul knows this, which is why he asked for a vote on his resolution. He also knows that any senator who does not support this resolution is essentially allowing Ukraine to receive billions of dollars in subsidies from American taxpayers – funds that could be used to help the people of that country.

“Senators who vote against my resolution today will send a message to all Americans that they clearly prioritize Ukraine over the people they represent and support America being last.” , Paul said.

Paul is right on this point and should be commended for this initiative. As mentioned above, no logical person wants to see Ukraine invaded by Russia or the millions of innocent Ukrainians affected by the war. This is undoubtedly immoral Russian aggression. However, it is also wrong to continue asking American taxpayers to fund Ukraine’s defense. As Paul pointed out, given that our country is in billions of dollars of debt, this is also something we can no longer afford to do.
