What’s the weekend weather and forecast for Thanksgiving in Fayetteville?

The National Weather Service offices in Raleigh and Wilmington placed the entire Cape Fear region under a frost advisory from Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Temperatures in Fayetteville could drop to freezing for the first time since late February, ending any confusion for the flowers that began blooming over the past week. In the meantime, unless you’re up at midnight, there’s a good chance you’ll have missed the warmer temperatures we’ll see in the area through Saturday afternoon.

A strong cold front that dropped about 0.75 inches of rain on the city has passed, leaving much colder air in place. It’s possible that traditionally colder parts of the Cape Fear region could dip into the upper 20s before things start to warm up again this weekend.

And there’s still some cold air arriving in time for Thanksgiving.

Here is the configuration

A resilient ridge of high pressure finally collapsed this week, allowing Canadian air to sweep across the region overnight. Temperatures in Fayetteville will struggle to get out of the 50s over the next few days, while overnight lows in the 30s are a given.

The last official freezing temperature in Fayetteville was on February 22. Last year, the “first frost” date was November 2. So we gained almost three weeks of weather above freezing this fall – no wonder the plants were confused!

The outlook for the coming days is simple, although fresh. Look for plenty of sunshine, brisk northwest winds, and a high in the 50s. It’s blanket and hot chocolate weather for football prep, with kickoff temperatures around 45 to 48 degrees.

The weekend

As the cold air moderates, the region will warm slightly. Look for morning lows in the upper 30s to around 40, warming to the 60s in the afternoon. Northwest winds will ease in the evening, with a low in the upper 30s in Fayetteville.

Sunday will be a little warmer, say 64 in town. We will have plenty of sunshine and the winds will shift to the west, then southwest. Overnight lows are expected to hold near 40.

On the road

Next week, the Cape Fear region will experience a brief period of warming. This seems to be the trend as we approach December.

In other words, goodbye flowers and hello electric blankets.

Have a great weekend!
