Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey lead Sixers to third win of the season

PHILADELPHIA — Jared McCain scored 30 points and Tyrese Maxey added 26 as the 76ers ended a five-game losing streak with a 113-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in an NBA Cup game Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Playing without Joel Embiid (left knee swelling) and Paul George (left knee bone bruise), the Sixers’ young backcourt took over in the fourth quarter with an extended scoring burst that helped them recover from a deficit of nine points.

McCain, the 20-year-old first-round pick last June after playing just one season at Duke, has scored at least 20 points in seven straight games dating back to Nov. 10. He is only the fourth rookie in franchise history to do so. So, Allen Iverson (11 consecutive games in 1996-97), Embiid (10 in 2016-17) and Jerry Stackhouse (eight games in 1995-96) have already done it. him.

“Obviously he’s continuing his hot start here, and Tyrese looked a lot more like him, that’s for sure,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. “Those two guys were, you know, especially when we really needed them, they were outstanding. But I think everyone who touched the floor tonight contributed.

“Obviously we continue to be without some key players, and it’s a big step forward from these guys. I just think with the effort and the energy and everything they did, we felt like we had a decent number of assists as well, 25 is not a ton but a decent number. … We certainly needed a win by any means possible, but it was an energetic and pretty hard-fought win.

Embiid and George are expected to miss Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Clippers before being re-evaluated early next week.

Kelly Oubre Jr. added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Sixers (3-12, 1-2 NBA Cup), who won only their third game of the season and for the first time in regulation. Philadelphia’s other wins came against Indiana (October 27) and Charlotte (November 10).

Brooklyn was led by Cameron Johnson, who scored 37 points. Keon Johnson added 18 points for the Nets (6-10, 1-2 NBA Cup), who have lost four of their last five games.

Takeaways

Nets: Brooklyn’s 19 turnovers led to 13 more Philadelphia shots and 28 points.

76ers: With Embiid and George out, the growth of McCain — the club’s first-round pick out of Duke — has been one of the few bright spots.

Key moment

Maxey and McCain combined to score 19 straight points for the Sixers midway through the fourth quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a 12-point lead.

Key statistic

McCain has scored 20 or more points in seven straight games.

To be continued

Both teams are back in action on Sunday evening. The Nets are in Sacramento, while the Sixers host the LA Clippers.
