Is Spence considering Fundora? “We are working,” says former champion

Errol Spence posted on social media today: “We are working” while standing next to his fighter, Frank Martin.

Spence, 34, has not fought since being knocked out in the ninth round by Terence Crawford in their undisputed welterweight championship match 15 months ago on July 29, 2023.

Errol turns 35 on March 3 and he can’t afford to stay out of the ring for long without ruining his chances of reviving his career. Financially, Spence can retire with the money he made from his fight with Crawford.

If Spence stays out of the ring any longer he should step down because if he tries to come back without making a tune-up he will be beaten again. Spence says he doesn’t believe in warm-up fights, which is why he got blown out by Crawford and made the Nebraska native look better than he is.

It would be a shame if Spence doesn’t return to the ring to challenge WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in 2025. This is the fighter Spence has been mentioned as possibly being next to face.

The ambition that Spence once had has been missing since his high-speed car crash on October 10, 2019 in Dallas, Texas. Spence has only fought three times since and has looked poor in each of those fights.

If Spence beats Fundora, he could face WBA champion Crawford in a rematch to try to avenge his defeat. Some believe Spence’s loss was because he was exhausted for the fight and coming off a 15-month layoff. It was stupid for Spence to fight Crawford without a tune-up or catch weight.

It’s unclear if former unified 147-pound champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) is referring to him “working” toward a long-awaited return or if he’s referring to lightweight contender Martin (18-1, 12 KO).

“Say, man, we’re working,” Errol Spence said on social media.

In a competitive fight, Frank Martin was knocked out in the eighth round by WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis on June 15. At the time of the stoppage, Tank was ahead by scores 67-66, 67-66 and 67-66. Martin could still have won if he hadn’t been caught with a big shot and eliminated.

Martin’s chances of winning a world title at lightweight are slim because the division is made up of fighters who have more talent than him and he is getting older. He turns 30 on January 12, and he might as well be 40 because he’s way behind the competition in the weight class.

Spence might be able to earn Martin good paydays, but he can’t defeat the best fighters in the lightweight division. He struggled mightily against Artem Harutyunyan, having to rally to win a close 12-round unanimous decision. Martin’s career now seems to consist of winning money fights, but without him having any chance of winning a title. It’s just a hustle at this point.
