Families caught in county child care freeze

Good morning Monday morning, Boulder. Fall is well underway, which means local governments are facing their annual budget challenges.

We’ve been tracking how the end of federal COVID-related stimulus funds is affecting the city and county’s ability to provide crucial safety services.

Today, Brooke Stephenson examines the impact of Boulder County Child Care Funding Freeze about local families. After giving birth, teen mom April Morales depended on the county’s child care assistance program for child care, which allowed her to stay in high school and pursue her career goals. However, a minor paperwork error caused her benefits to be canceled, and because Boulder County is indefinitely suspending CCAP applications, she cannot reapply.

This funding freeze – driven by the end of federal stimulus and rising child care costs – has led Morales and other local parents to put their college and career plans on hold while options affordable child care is decreasing.

“It doesn’t suck being a teen mom,” Morales told us. “It’s a shame to have to put everything on hold because we can’t find childcare.”

Lately, two corrections to our Friday edition: Stephenson’s story of transform Boulder offices into housing mentioned a meeting planned for this week, which was postponed until next year. We also omitted the word “creek” in reference to the construction of the Fourmile Canyon Creek-Cottonwood Trail underpass. Thanks to our eagle-eyed readers for pointing them out!

Mitigation efforts helped homes survive Stone Canyon Fire, Wildfire Partners says

Wildfire Partners, a program providing in-home fire mitigation assessments to residents in parts of Boulder County, shared data on its impact during the Stone Canyon Fire.. The fire, which broke out July 30 near Lyons, killed one person, destroyed five properties and burned 1,500 acres.

Of the 35 homes in the burned area, 12 had been assessed by Wildfire Partners, and seven had received certification. The seven certified houses survived. Additionally, six homes met the county’s mitigation requirements under building codes, and all survived. This means that 13 households receiving mitigation measures had a 100% survival rate, compared to a 77% survival rate for unmitigated households.said Wildfire Partners.

One homeowner attributed the survival of her home to the clearing and pruning of trees near the structure, describing the mitigation as a “moral thing to do.»

West Boulder County residents can contact Wildfire Partners at [email protected] or 303-441-1420 for information on how to obtain an appraisal.

Also, until October 31, a discount program offers up to $500 to remove juniper trees, cover vents, remove wooden fences or create five feet of defensible space around homes for all county residents. For the first time, the city of Boulder is also offering residents up to $1,000 begin fire mitigation work around their homes, applications must be submitted by November 30.
