Mostly sunny skies, warmer temperatures Sunday afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, AlabamaWBRC) – Happy Sunday! It’s another cold start to the day with a variety of Freeze Advisories and Freeze Warnings across central Alabama until 8 a.m. CST. Most of us are between 30 and 35 years old. Patchy fog is possible before 8 a.m. CST, but I don’t expect widespread problems if you plan to hit the road early this morning. AccuTrack satellite and first alert radar are showing us clear and dry. High pressure is moving east, allowing us to see southwest winds this afternoon at 5-10 mph. The southerly component of the wind will help us warm above average this afternoon with highs in the mid to upper 60s. We will likely remain mostly sunny this afternoon. It should be a nice day to do some yard work or put up holiday decorations. If you have plans for the evening, we will stay dry and cool with temperatures falling between 50 and 7:00 p.m. CST.

The rain returns Monday evening: We will likely see a fast-moving cold front move through the Southeast Monday evening. Showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm are expected to move into central Alabama between 7 p.m. CST Monday and 7 a.m. CST Tuesday. No severe weather is expected, but we could see pockets of heavy rain and wind gusts up to 30 mph. Precipitation totals will likely remain light, with most getting a quarter of an inch or less. Most of Tuesday will be dry with clouds clearing. Temperatures will likely cool closer to average with highs in the 60s. You’ll definitely want to pack a jacket if you plan to go out Tuesday afternoon. Areas north of I-20 could cool into the upper 50s with windy conditions.

First Weather Alert Day declared for Thanksgiving Day: If you plan to travel early in the week, the weather should remain calm in the Southeast for most of Tuesday and Wednesday. High temperatures will likely climb into the upper 60s to mid 60s, with overnight lows in the 40s and 50s. The big story next week will be the decent chance of seeing showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night through Thursday . Long-range models hint at unstable air developing along and south of I-20/59. With strong momentum in place, it is possible that we will see a few strong or severe storms. Details remain uncertain at this point, but we suspect you’ll see some sort of impact for Thanksgiving Day. It is in this spirit that we declared Thursday a First day of weather alert. The latest timing with this cold front shows most of the potential for rain and thunderstorms moving into our area Wednesday night into Thursday morning. There is an outside chance that Thursday night will be a little drier if this cold front moves through the area faster. This cold front could produce an inch of rain in central Alabama. Higher totals will be possible along and north of Highway 278 in northern Alabama. Colder air will return as Black Friday approaches.

Black Friday Forecast: Next weekend promises to be cool and dry. We should see plenty of sunshine next Friday and Saturday with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The weather will likely be cool and windy, with freezing temperatures possible next Saturday and Sunday mornings. Just make sure you’re ready for Black Friday shopping! The Iron Bowl promises to be sunny and cool with launch temperatures in the lower 50s. Long-term models suggest that below-average temperatures will be very likely in early December. We could see a severe freeze around December 1-2, 2024. Now is the time to make sure your home is winterized and ready for cold temperatures.
