Canada. government announces partnership with NFI Group and Manitoba to expand manufacturing operations

Minister Vandal announces partnership with NFI Group and Manitoba to create an “all-Canadian” facility in Winnipeg (CNW Group/Prairies Economic Development Canada)

WINNIPEG — On October 25, Dan Vandal, Minister of PrairiesCan, announced a $15 million federal investment for NFI Group to expand its operations and fully manufacture New Flyer transit buses in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This investment will allow NFI Group to competitively meet the growing demand for Canadian-made zero-emission city buses, adding skilled jobs to the company’s Canadian operations with more opportunities for local suppliers and increasing the role of Manitoba in the green economy of the Prairies.

By increasing bus manufacturing capacity at NFI Group’s Winnipeg-based facilities, Canadian transit authorities will be able to purchase more Canadian-made, zero-emission buses to meet their fleet renewal needs. The funding will ensure NFI Group can meet Canadian standards and support the development of workforce training specific to zero-emission vehicle manufacturing, including a proposed “zero-emission pre-apprenticeship program.”

“Canada is a world leader in a low-carbon economy. Today’s announcement with NFI Group builds on significant investments our government is making to build Canada’s zero-emission vehicle supply chain, including in commuting systems. This is an expression of confidence in our manufacturing sector and in our efforts to build a sustainable economy for the future that is part of Canada’s path to carbon neutrality,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Agriculture. ‘Innovation, Science and Industry.

“Today’s announcement is an important milestone for the entire NFI team, which will allow us to complete complete buses in Canada for the first time in over 20 years. I would like to thank our partners in the Province of Manitoba and PrairiesCan for their commitment and financial support which will help strengthen Manitoba’s green economy,” said Paul Soubry, President and CEO of NFI Group. “These funds will be strategically invested alongside our own capital to increase our production capacity and increase our supply of zero-emission city buses, which will create new jobs and help create more livable North American communities,” said said Paul Soubry, President and CEO of NFI. .
