Man killed in shooting near funeral home in Prince George’s County

Police confirmed Tuesday that one person is dead after a shooting near a funeral home in Landover.

According to Prince George’s County police, officers responded to the 7400 block of Landover Road just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for a reported shooting near JB Jenkins Funeral Home.

“I want to clarify that the initial crime scene was a funeral home nearby. However, that has nothing to do with this case,” Officer Emily Austin said. “I was told that the victim was in a vehicle traveling on 75th Street towards Landover Road, and as the suspects approached in their own vehicle, the victim shot at the victim in the vehicle he was in.”

According to Officer Austin, the shooting does not appear to be random. The victim, who was unidentified at the time of this writing, was found dead in a car a few blocks away in the 7100 block of Old Landover Road. The victim was in the passenger seat, Austin said.

“This will form part of our investigation into who else was involved. I can confirm there was some property damage to a number of vehicles. However, apart from our deceased victim, there were no other injuries as a result of this incident.” he said.

The crime scene near 75th Street and Landover Road contained at least 60 evidence markers and was cleared around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Jose Diaz lives nearby and was passing through the area Tuesday during the police investigation.

“If these are evidence marks and these are bullet casings… well, that’s a lot of bullets,” Diaz said. “Defend yourself, but be at peace with yourself because there are kids playing all the time in this area. If you see bullets flying, man… come on, kids could get shot. This is something that doesn’t really happen, you could be taking someone away. Someone else’s loved one is away and that’s a tragic thing.” .”

As of the time of this writing, neither the vehicle nor the suspect have been identified by authorities.
