The two-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. near the 3700 block of Highway 30 in DeWitt, along Iowa’s eastern border, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police said the SUV was apparently stopped or disabled in one of the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 “when the flatbed truck/trailer struck it from behind.”

The vehicle flew into a ditch next to the highway following the collision, and the truck was found stopped along the shoulder with “significant damage to the front end.”

The 70-year-old driver of the Dodge truck was the only person wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

While Jackson and King were pronounced dead at the scene, CarterEpps was taken to a local university hospital, where the 5-year-old “died shortly after arrival,” according to authorities. The child, whose name was not disclosed, was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The three adults were taken to various local hospitals and treated for their injuries, the sheriff’s office added.
