Amarillo Zoo welcomes second baby kangaroo

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Zoo announced the arrival of a second baby kangaroo named Rally.

The zoo says Rally is a 3-month-old female red kangaroo. he agrees Ike, a two-year-old male red kangaroo who came to the zoo in June.

“Rally and Ike hit it off right away. “They became inseparable,” Amarillo Zoo Curator Berkeley Hilliard said. “Ike is his new big brother. He is very protective of her. He’s very sweet and shy and needs to be around his new baby brother or the zookeeper. “It’s so cute watching them hang out together.”

Rally arrived in Amarillo from Dragonstone Farm near Austin earlier this month, according to the zoo.

“We want everyone to come and say hello to Rally and welcome him to Amarillo,” Hilliard said. “It was a joy.”

The zoo says Rally plays with her new brother during the day and sleeps in a pouch at night; This is typical of red kangaroos in their early years.

Officials say the red kangaroo is the largest marsupial in Australia. Females are smaller than males and can weigh as much as 80 pounds. Females are generally faster than males, reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.
