According to the emergency report, first responders received an alarming call that an employee was trapped in the oven, which was still on. Despite the efforts of staff to turn off the oven and rescue her, when help arrived, the young woman had already died.

2. Ongoing investigation

Halifax Regional Police, in conjunction with the Occupational Health and Safety Division and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service, are investigating to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event. The investigation so far has been described as “complex”, according to Constable Martin Cromwell. Gursimran Kaur emigrated to Canada about three years ago in search of a better future. She and her mother worked together on the same shift at the Walmart store. The Halifax Sikh community, to which Gursimran and her family belonged, expressed its deep sadness at the loss of the young woman. The local Sikh society supports Kaur’s mother, who was the first to try to find her daughter after not seeing her at work for more than an hour.

The community launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the family, which has raised more than $104,000 to date.

4. Walmart Response

Walmart Canada released a statement expressing its “deep sadness” over the loss of its employee. “Our most sincere thoughts are with our associate’s family during this difficult time,” the company said. Additionally, Walmart provided access to 24/7 virtual care services and offered on-site support, including grief counseling for Kaur’s co-workers.

The Halifax store remains temporarily closed while authorities continue their investigation, and a stop work order has been issued against the Walmart bakery and a piece of equipment involved in the accident.
