Toronto Maple Leafs fans share their displeasure over jersey raffle

The Toronto Maple Leafs are 4-4-0 to start the 2024-25 season, which isn’t great, but back-to-back four-goal losses have fans on edge. During their most recent loss to the St. Louis Blues, a fan let the Maple Leafs know how high expectations were in Toronto.

After losing 5-1 at the end of the third period, a fan of Scotiabank Arena threw a Maple Leafs jersey over the glass and onto the ice. New Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz picked up the sweater and pulled it off the ice.

Jersey tossing is a fairly common occurrence for hockey fans, especially in Canada, when their team doesn’t meet their standards. The Maple Leafs have Stanley Cup aspirations, but continue to fall short.

The loss to the Blues was the second straight four-goal loss, the first coming against the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of 6-2. According to Sportsnet Stats, this was the first time the Maple Leafs lost by four or more goals in consecutive games since 2015.

New head coach Craig Bérubé was clearly upset with his players earlier in the competition against the Blues. Judging by the final score, Bérubé had his reasons.

One of the main reasons for the Maple Leafs’ early struggles can be attributed to their power play. Since the 2023-24 regular season, they have scored just 13 goals in 121 attempts. It’s a 10.7% success rate and includes their first-round elimination in seven games against the Boston Bruins.

That’s nowhere near where the rate should be when you consider the personnel on the Maple Leafs roster. Auston Matthews scored 69 goals last season while William Nylander scored 40 himself.

Maple Leafs players, coaches, front office and fans I expect much more than what they have seen so far. One playoff victory in the last eight years has forced fans to lose patience.

Success is expected in Toronto and it’s up to the Maple Leafs players to bring glory to the organization for the first time in 57 years.
