Deep Cove Flood Evacuation Order Lifted

An evacuation order for six properties in North Vancouver’s hard-hit Deep Cove neighborhood has been lifted, the district said.

Last Sunday’s evacuations came as significant flooding in the area during a destructive and deadly atmospheric river event left waterfront properties structurally unsafe. The rushing water destroyed the paths, giving way to sinkholes.

On Thursday, four days later, local officials said crews had completed construction work needed to address the hazards and residents could return home.

“This work included restoring adequate drainage of the creek downstream to Indian Arm and restoring the flow of the creek upstream to its original state,” a notice from the District of North Vancouver states.

“Homeowners have been informed that hazards may be present on their property, and we have encouraged them to exercise due diligence on their properties. »

Last weekend, 344 millimeters of rain fell in North Vancouver, more than double the rain that fell during a well-publicized 2014 storm that also prompted evacuations and flooded a Lynn Valley high school.

No serious injuries were reported in the district during the weather event, according to DNV.
