’90s rocker suffers serious stroke while on tour; GoFundMe exceeds $375,000

A GoFundMe campaign for singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet, who recently suffered a debilitating stroke, has raised more than $300,000. Originally set with a goal of $250,000, the fundraiser has since increased its goal to $400,000.

According to Rolling stone, Sweet — the ’90s rocker known for hits such as “Fox on the Run” and “The Ballroom Blitz” — suffered a stroke on Oct. 12, forcing him to cancel his national tour.

According to his manager, Russell Carter, Sweet was first taken to Toronto Western Hospital, where he received immediate and intensive care. He has since been transferred to a rehabilitation center in his hometown of Omaha, where he will begin his road to recovery for several weeks.

“Matthew was quickly admitted to Toronto Western Hospital where he was placed in excellent care and removed from immediate danger,” Carter told Rolling Stone. “Matthew was transferred today to a rehabilitation center at his home in Omaha where he will undergo extensive therapy.”

According to the GoFundMe page, Sweet “will require months of treatment and rehabilitation which we hope will lead to a full recovery. It goes without saying that the costs of all these treatments will be overwhelming.

“We’re projecting a total close to a quarter of a million dollars. Your thoughts, love and support will mean the world to him. But please donate financially if you can. Matthew will be forever grateful to you.
