A former oil tanker in difficulty obtained exemptions

EDMONTON – What goes up must come down.

The Edmonton Oilers know this very well. This crew has seen it all, from the highs of the Stanley Cup Final to the lows of a 2-4-1 start.

Part of those ups and downs is sending promising players to work on their game and calling up others to replace injured teammates.

That’s precisely what’s happening with former Oilers winger Kailer Yamamoto.

The 26-year-old first-round pick has had a rough time of late. He went from the Oilers to the Detroit Red Wings to the Seattle Kraken and now the Utah Hockey Club.

Now he’s ready to play some games for Utah’s AHL affiliate, the Tuscon Roadrunners.

Yamamoto has played in three games for Utah this year. He is -1 with just one shot on goal, averaging 10:40 of ice time per game. His career average over 306 NHL games is 15:31.

The struggling winger last played in the AHL during the 2019-20 season. In 23 games with the Bakersfield Condors, he recorded 16 points.

With Nick Bjugstad returning from injury, Yamamoto was the odd player out. Given his impact on the scoresheet, it’s easy to understand why he pulled the short end of the hockey stick.

He’s nowhere near the promise he showed with the Oilers. During the 2019-20 season, he recorded 26 points in 27 games. Two seasons later, he collected 41 points, including 20 goals, averaging nearly 17 minutes per evening.

To reach those heights again, Yamamoto has a big hole to dig himself into. How far will he fall before turning around? The jury is still out on this.
