46-year-old man arrested and charged with sexual assault after student attacked at University of Manitoba residence

A 46-year-old man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault after a student was attacked while she slept in her University of Manitoba student residence early Friday morning.

Winnipeg police said Friday a man entered the Arthur V. Mauro residence on Dafoe Road on the University of Manitoba’s south campus and then broke into the victim’s room at 4 45 p.m., while she was sleeping.

The woman pushed the intruder away after he entered her bedroom and physically assaulted her. She was treated for her injuries and is in stable condition, police said Friday afternoon.

They released footage from a security video showing the suspect involved in the attack and a description of the man.

On Friday around 11 p.m., officers responded to a call from a person who had spotted a man matching that description along the southbound lane of the Pembina Highway, police said in an update Saturday.

They found him in the 1800 block of Pembina Highway, north of Abinoji Mikanah. He was arrested and handed over to the police sex crimes unit.

They say they determined that Garry Junior Edwards, 46, entered the residence building and broke into a secure area and then into the victim’s bedroom.

Edwards faces a number of charges, including sexual assault, robbery and multiple counts of breaking and entering, as well as a charge of attempting to overcome resistance by choking, choking or strangling a person .

The Winnipeg Police Service says anyone who has experienced sexual assault can access victim support services at 204-986-6350 or through the Klinic’s sexual assault crisis line at 204-786-8631.
